Rifle cant: the error you cannot see through the scope

A reticle that looks level through a scope can be several degrees off. The error it causes is zero at your zero distance and grows with every click you dial.

Your scope's elevation adjustment moves the reticle along the scope's own vertical axis. If the rifle is tilted, that axis is not vertical relative to gravity — so part of your carefully calculated elevation correction is spent moving the impact sideways.

Why it grows with distance

The key point, and the one that makes cant deceptive: the error is proportional to how much elevation you have dialled, not to the distance directly.

At your zero distance you have dialled nothing, so a canted rifle groups exactly where a level one does. Dial ten mils for a long shot and the same cant now tilts ten mils' worth of correction, throwing a sizeable horizontal component into a shot you thought was purely vertical.

How much cant do people actually have?

More than they think. Eye-levelling a reticle against a target frame or a distant fence post is reliable to perhaps two or three degrees on a good day, and far worse from an awkward field position. Shooting off a bank, off a barricade, or from a rollover prone position introduces cant that feels level because your head is tilted with the rifle.

There are two distinct problems, and they need different fixes:

  • Mounting cant — the reticle is not aligned with the rifle's vertical plane. A constant, fixed error. Fixed once, at the bench.
  • Shooting cant — the whole rifle is tilted in the moment. Varies shot to shot, and worst in field positions. Fixed with a level and a habit.

Mounting the scope straight

  1. Level the rifle, not the scope, firstPut a level on the flat of the action or the scope base and get the rifle itself plumb in the vise.

Managing cant while shooting

A bubble level mounted where you can see it in your peripheral vision is the single most cost-effective long-range accessory there is. It costs less than a box of match ammunition and it removes an error that no amount of good wind calling can compensate for.

The discipline is to check the bubble as part of the firing sequence, not as an afterthought — settle into position, check level, confirm the reticle, break the shot. Under time pressure this is the step people drop first, which is why it is worth building into a positional drill rather than hoping for it on match day.

Cant in the solver

The app can take a cant angle as an input and include its effect in the solution, which is useful in two situations: when you know your position forces a consistent tilt, and when you want to see how much a given amount of cant would actually cost you at a given distance.

What it cannot do is fix random cant. A varying tilt produces a varying error, and there is no number you can enter that averages it away. The correction is a level and a routine, not a setting.

Where it sits in the priority list

Inside 400 m, with little elevation dialled, cant is a minor contributor and other errors dominate. Past 700 m, with substantial elevation on the turret, it moves into the same league as spin drift and a moderate wind error — and unlike the wind, it is entirely under your control.

Frequently asked

Does cant affect my zero? +

No. At the zero distance no elevation is dialled, so there is nothing for the cant to tilt. That is exactly why the error hides until you start shooting at distance.

Can I level the reticle against the target frame? +

Only roughly. Target frames are not reliably plumb and your eye is not a level. A plumb line at 25 m is a better reference and takes two minutes.

Do I need a level if I only shoot to 300 m? +

Not really. With a couple of MIL dialled the sideways component of a few degrees of cant is small. It becomes worth the fitting past roughly 500–600 m.
